Favourite food

Striped Wolffish likes to eat crabs, lobsters, shrimp, and other shellfish as well as sea urchins, sea stars, and sea cucumbers.

Flavour Profile

Striped Wolffish has tasty, firm, and “satisfying” white flesh. Since it lives on shellfish, the flavour is very rich and has some flavour similarities to shellfish such as lobster. It is excellent on the BBQ.

Common size of Striped Wolffish is between 50 and 80 cm and 12 lbs. Some can grow up to 120 cm and weigh up to 30 lbs, and live for 20 years.

Salties Imports offers Striped Wolffish all throughout the year. The chart bellow shows the low (white), normal (blue), and heavy (dark blue) availability seasons by month:

Our Fishermen

As a family company with deep roots in the fishing villages of Iceland, Salties Imports chooses its fishermen and producers carefully to make sure the product is of the highest quality and freshness. Most are independent fishermen in Iceland who use small boats.

Fishing Grounds

Striped Wolffish is caught all around Iceland and at depths of 10 — 300 m. The largest fishing areas are around the Westfjords, South Eastern, and South Western coasts. Striped Wolffish tends to be found around sandy ocean floors.

Salties Traceability Program

All Striped Wolffish sold by Salties Imports comes with traceability documents showing boat numbers, fishing gear, landing sites, and processing locations. It is our belief that transparency is a necessity in seafood so our customers know exactly all details of the product.

Fisheries Management

Fisheries management in Iceland is based on extensive research on the fish stocks and the marine ecosystem. A catch limitation system is the cornerstone of the Icelandic fisheries management system. Management is also supported by other measures such as area restrictions, fishing gear restrictions, and the use of closed areas to conserve important vulnerable habitats.

Fun Facts

Striped Wolffish lives in a very cold environment around Iceland, and when it loses its teeth during maturation of its young, it doesn’t move much. To avoid any cold related problems, the Striped Wolffish produces a natural antifreeze that helps keep their blood flowing and allows them to thrive in the freezing environment.

Cooking Methods

We recommend Pan Frying, Poaching, Baking, Grilling, Steaming, Sautéing, and Broiling our Striped Wolffish.
