European Ling likes eating Herring, young Cod, Haddock, and shellfish.
European Ling is related to Cod with a slightly sweet taste and pearlescent white flesh. It is slightly softer than Cod and has medium flakes that separate easily when cooked.
Common size of European Ling is between 90 and 110 cm. They are able to reach a length of 200 cm and live fo 25 years.
Salties Imports offers European Ling all throughout the year. The chart bellow shows the low (white), normal (blue), and heavy (dark blue) availability seasons by month:
As a family company with deep roots in the fishing villages of Iceland, Salties Imports chooses its fishermen and producers carefully to make sure the product is of the highest quality and freshness. Most are independent fishermen in Iceland who use small boats.
European Ling is caught around Iceland and at depths of 40 — 1000 m. The largest fishing areas are on the Western, South Western, an Southern coasts, with the largest catch being right off the South Western Coast.
Salties Traceability Program
All European Ling sold by Salties Imports comes with traceability documents showing boat numbers, fishing gear, landing sites, and processing locations. It is our belief that transparency is a necessity in seafood so our customers know exactly all details of the product.
Fishery management in Iceland is based on extensive research on the fish stocks and the marine ecosystem. A catch limitation system is the cornerstone of the Icelandic fisheries management system. Management is also supported by other measures such as area restrictions, fishing gear restrictions, and the use of closed areas to conserve important vulnerable habitats.
Salted Ling Roe is considered a delicacy in Spain and is known as “Hevas de maruca”.
We recommend Deep Frying, Pan Frying, Baking, Grilling, Steaming, Broiling, and Sautéing our European Ling.
