Fishing Grounds

Saithe is found at depths of 10 — 450 m, staying mostly at around 400 m depth. Saithe is caught mostly along the edge of the continental shelf and deep off the westfjords.

Fun Fact

Young kids in Iceland love going fishing at their local harbour, they bring a rod and bait and sit for hours. The most common catch around those areas is Saithe. No matter how big or small it is, it is always a great feeling to catch, and it puts up a mighty fight.

Our Fishermen

As a family company with deep roots in the fishing villages of Iceland, Salties Imports chooses its fishermen and producers carefully to make sure the product is of the highest quality and freshness. Most are independent fishermen in Iceland who fish on small boats.

Salties Ocean to Plate Traceability

All Saithe sold by Salties Imports comes with traceability documents showing boat names, fishing gear, fishing areas, landing sites, and landing dates. It is our belief that transparency is a necessity in seafood so our customers know all the details of the product.

Common size of Saithe is between 60 and 110 cm and around 20 lbs. They can reach a size of 132 cm and weight upwards of 30 lbs.

Flavour Profile

Saithe is related to Cod. It has a slightly darker flesh, but when cooked it is considered by many to be superior in flavour. Saithe has a slightly sweet taste, with medium firm flakes that hold well when cooked. Saithe is becoming more and more popular in European restaurants, especially in Britain.

Favourite Food

Saithe likes eating Krill, small fish, Capelin, Herring, and Squid.

Fisheries Management

Fisheries management in Iceland is based on extensive research on the fish stocks and the marine ecosystem. The cornerstone of Icelandic Fisheries management is its catch limitation system. Management is also supported by other measures such as area restrictions, fishing gear restrictions, and the use of closed areas to conserve important vulnerable habitats. Our Saithe is Oceanwise recommended and carries the Oceanwise Logo.
